Addiction
There are many types of addiction or obsessions which range from mildly irritating to life threatening. Drugs, alcohol and tobacco are the most common (see drinking problems, stopping smoking or drugs links for treatment information).
Also there are other types of behaviour, which can be equally problematic. These could include compulsive or obsessive eating, nail-biting, excessive exercise and even relationships and sexual behaviour issues. (See obsessions or sexual problems link for more about these conditions).
There can be many reasons why people become addicted. Some try drugs or alcohol when young then gradually, or sometimes immediately, become physically or psychologically addicted to it. Things can escalate and soon your life can be temporarily or permanently ruined. Others may turn to a substance or type of behaviour as a way of dealing with something else.
There is also a theory that some people are genetically prone to addictive behaviour, which may make it harder to recover and research in this area is ongoing.
Whatever the reason, the good news is that there is a great deal that can be done to help deal with the problem. (see other links for more information about treatment).
