Child Abuse
In recent years it has become more widely known about the huge number of adults who have been subject to child abuse. Years ago it was not talked and people suffered in silence but nowadays more and more people are coming forward to get help.
Abuse can take many forms including physical, emotional and sexual all which can cause emotional damage to a child and the consequences of that damage are often carried through into adult life.
Those who have suffered child abuse may have spent much of their lives in what psychologists call a dissociated state. Whilst in some ways they may appear to cope reasonably well but as the years go by tell tail signs start appearing such as getting intrusive thoughts and memories or finding it hard to have fulfilling relationships others may turn to alcohol or drugs for temporary relief.
Some may also suffer from a range of everyday psychosomatic symptoms that may appear not to be related such as headaches, back pain, insomnia, sexual problems and many others.
Our Clinical Director has worked for many years with adult survivors of child abuse both male and female and his gentle non judgemental nature and experience in this area has led to great success helping patients process the past traumas and get on with a more fulfilling and happy life.
He also spent some years training government staff (Social Workers, Probations Officer, Child Protection Officers, Family Liaison Officers etc.) in this area and until 2004 he was the Vice Chairman of a national charity offering help and support to survivors of child abuse.
