Depression
Depression is a very common condition and there are many possible causes. Reactive depression is very common and, as its name suggests, it is a reaction to something that has happened such as bereavement, relationship break-ups, job loss, bullying, motoring accidents, being burgled, exam pressures or any upsetting or traumatic event.
For some people reactive depression can resolve itself through the normal process of talking about the problem with friends and family and often by resolving the problem (assuming it is resolvable). However, for those who do not have anyone suitable to talk it through with or where after a period of time despite all efforts it is still not resolved therapy may be the answer.
This could involve going to see you doctor who may prescribe medication or you may prefer to choose a non-drug dependent route and opt for a “talking therapy” such as counselling, hypnotherapy or psychotherapy. At the Peel Clinic we would assess each case on its merits but would typical use a combination of Clinic Hypnosis (using visualizations and deep relaxations techniques) and counselling as we find this is normally the quickest route to resolving the problem.
Other depressions can have a chemical cause and these, in the first instance, need to be checked by your GP in case psychiatry is needed. If it is not then they may choose drug therapy initially and if that does not work a combination of drug therapy and a talking therapy. At the Peel Clinic we work in association with GP's and residential clinics providing Clinical Hypnosis, EMDR and other treatments all proven to help with depression.
