Eating Disorders

Eating disorders can range from mildly inconvenient to life threatening and can affect all age groups and both sexes. In recent years they have become more common and whilst the largest group is still teenagers girls and young women there are an increasing number of teenage boys and young men now affected by eating disorders.

The most typical disorders are Anorexia (those who gradually starve themselves) and Bulimia (those who eat then make themselves vomit). Both can be highly dangerous and can lead to serious illness and death.

Other eating disorders may include those who overeat perhaps to satisfy an emotional need (comfort eating) or perhaps to address an issue involving relationships (fear of having a intimate relationship or fear of sex) – see weight-loss section for more information.
