Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) has become very common especially with people who lead a stressful life. The cause of IBS is not known but over 50% of sufferers report it started after a particularly stressful event (bereavement, job loss, moving house, etc.), which suggests there is a psychological trigger in susceptible patients.
As there can be a number of medical causes for the symptoms of IBS you should first go to you GP who can eliminate other conditions through examination or by referring you for some simple tests. These test are more to exclude other medical conditions rather than to confirm IBS.
Having established you have IBS your GP may prescribe medication to help with the symptoms and may suggest making some lifestyle and dietary changes.
The use of Clinical Hypnosis has been researched and found to be of benefit in controlling the symptoms of IBS naturally and safely (see research section for details).
The treatment will involve teaching you a very deep form of relaxation and also using visualisations that help relax the natural action of your digestive system. You will be taught self-hypnosis so you can use the techniques at anytime in the future without the need to return to a therapist.
