Medical Problems

If you have a medical problem the first person you should see is your doctor. They are the only people who should diagnose a medical condition, as they are the only people qualified to do that and who will have your full medical history. If they feel further investigations are needed by a specialist doctor (Consultant) they will refer you to one in your area.

There are a number of medical conditions that can be helped considerably by psychological therapies such as clinical hypnosis but they should only be undertaken by therapists trained in those clinical areas.

Such medical conditions that respond well to psychological therapies are typically those medical illnesses that have psychosomatic origin (often stress related illnesses) or where stress or anxiety aggravates a medical condition.

Such conditions include asthma, skin rashes, insomnia, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Hypertension (high or low blood pressure), psychogenic infertility (infertility where there is no identifiable medical cause), headaches (migraines), insomnia and various others.

There is also another specialist psychological treatment that has been shown to be of benefit to those suffering from serious illnesses such as cancer or Aids which we can offer in association with your doctor or consultant – see section on serious illness.

If you are considering a psychological treatment for a medical condition first discuss it with your doctor. If your doctor is not an expert in such treatment contact the Peel Clinic and, if you wish, we can contact you doctor on your behalf. We will not give a treatment against the advice of you doctor or specialist.
