History of Hypnotherapy

Since all the new scientific research during the past ten years Clinical Hypnosis (Hypnotherapy) has become a very sought after treatment for many conditions. It is very powerful and effective when administered by a properly trained and experienced practitioner. It is long established, natural, safe and there are no harmful side effects.

The benefits are long lasting and often permanent. Courses of treatment are usually much shorter than other therapies making the overall cost lower. As it is a non-drug or chemical based therapy it avoids unpleasant side effects or building any unwanted drug dependency. It is effective for all ages from 8 to 80 yrs old.

The use of hypnosis in a clinical setting goes back hundreds of years and famous practitioners include Doctor Franz Mesmer, Sigmund Freud and in more recent years the highly respected Dr Milton Erickson.

Now, thanks to the pioneering work of Professor Mathew and other psychiatrists in the Nineties, there are a number of hypnotherapy units operating in the National Health Service and since 2004 all top medical schools in the UK include a training module in clinical hypnosis.

Clinical Uses

Hypnotherapy can be particularly helpful with phobias, irritable bowel syndrome, migraine, PMT, pain relief, psychogenic infertility, stress, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), insomnia, nail-biting, stuttering, nightmares, low self-esteem, asthma, arthritis, tinnitus, learning difficulties, bruxism, skin conditions, weight problems and stopping smoking. It is also used by athletes to enhance performance and by performers and public figures to build confidence and improve memory.

It is also very helpful in the treatment of alcoholism, addiction, trauma, child abuse and sexual problems but it is important that the therapist has had specialist training in these areas e.g. a clinical psychologist or a trained counsellor specialising in these areas.
